Leptolyngbya boryana is a filamentous versatile cyanobacterium. L. boryana has the ability to grow diazotrophically without heterocysts under micro-oxic conditions, and to grow heterotrophically with glucose in the dark. Under some light conditions L. boryana shows a motile phenotype. Transformation technique to isolate targeted gene disruptants has been already established, and shuttle vector between L. boryana and E. coli is also available. To understand such versatile biological characteristics, especially, nitrogen fixation, by the use of molecular genetic techniques, the complete nucleotide sequence of the genome has been elucidated
