The bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in water and biofilm from an industrial water cooling system was characterized by high-throughput sequencing of taxonomic marker genes. The effect of chlorination and the type of coating of the carbon steel in the inhibition of microbial fouling and microbially influenced corrosion was determined.
