The Architecture of Footpaths

The Architecture of Footpaths examines urban footpaths in the multicultural suburb of Footscray. The research frames footpaths as an important public space in cities; they are a site for everyday spatial practices, formal and informal commercial enterprise, and the direct interface between public and private realms. This PhD argues that many aspects of active vibrant areas are the result of how footpaths are used. Many of the activities have developed over time and contribute to local character. These uses need to be better understood in order to retain and maintain identity and belonging in rapidly developing areas such as Footscray.
