VPRS 11921 Register of Agreements to Let and Hire, Closer and Soldier Settlement Acts; Securities Taken by the Board of Land and Works Bushfire Advances 1926 and Cultivation Advances Act 1927

The first series in these volumes records the securities taken and held by the Board of Land and Works for the rent and hire of farm equipment and tools under the Closer and Discharged Soldiers Settlement Acts from 1924 to 1928. Details given are the number of the agreement, the date of the entry, the name and address of the settler, the correspondence number, the articles included in the agreements, the amount of money involved and any remarks (often about the completion of payments). Rented or hired equipment appears to be primarily the type of equipment such as ploughs and harvesters used for part only of the farming operation and which involved a significant amount of capital to own.Under Section 5 of the Closer Settlement Act 1918 (applicable to both closer and discharged soldier settlers, the Closer Settlement Board (from 1933 the Commission) was able to purchase tools, equipment and other farm necessities. It was then able to rent or hire them to settlers as the need arose.The second series recorded in Unit 1 records securities taken by the Board of Land and Works for the repayment of advances made to Crown lessees as Bush Fire Advances in 1926 and under the Cultivation Advances Act 1927 which allowed for advances to be made for the purchase of such necessities as seed at the start of the farming year with these to be repaid once returns upon the farming operation had been received. This security took the form of a lien or mortgage.Details given are the number and Date of Entry, the name and the location of the recipient of the advance, the Volume and Folio of the Land Certificate Lease, the Security lodged and the Titles Office registration number.
