The retail and center concept of the state capital Dresden is the planning basis for securing and sustainably strengthening the polycentral center structure in Dresden. The functioning of the centres as concentration areas of commercial, service, cultural and social institutions is determined in particular by the respective size and structure of the retail industry. Corresponding concepts since the beginning of the 1990s, first the framework concept retail 1991/95, later the center concept are an essential decision aid for retail settlements. Thanks to these foundations, the ongoing demand for retail space has been substantially reconciled with overall urban development. As a result, the city now has an adequate level of care while avoiding one-sided industry/business form structures and was able to expand the attractiveness and multifunctionality of its centers. The retail and centre concept was updated by decision of the City Council on 15 June 2023.
