The central goal of this project was to investigate the role of Sirt1 on vascular health in patients with COPD. For that, we proposed to use resveratrol as a Sirt1 activator and assess the activation of nitric oxide dependent vascular response and a reduction in systemic inflammation. To answer this question, we designed a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study in which patients with COPD completed a 6-month treatment with resveratrol and placebo.The trial enrolled patients with COPD Gold Stage II-IV. Each patient was randomized to receive either Resveratrol (500 mg/day, slow release) or placebo for 3 months. After a minimum of 4-week washout period, patients received the other phase for another 3 months.Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic had a great impact in the trial and multiple data points were unable to be collected. Several patients were affected by COVID-19 during the trial and their participation had to be excluded.
