On average, a Belgian bought roughly 44 kilos of fruit in 2021. Bananas were the favorite fruit in Belgium that year, with a per capita purchase volume of 7.8 kilos. Furthermore, this year, an average Belgian consumer would buy nearly 2.3 kilos of melon and approximately two kilos of kiwis. Per capita expenditure on fruit    In 2021, the per capita spending on fresh fruit was 128 euros – a decrease in comparison to the previous year. Fresh fruit expenditure made up the largest share of fruit expenditure in Belgium. In 2020, dried, preserved and frozen fruit combined accounted for less than 10 percent of the total expenditure on fruit. Organic fruit   Although organic food consumption is on the rise in Belgium, the amount of organic fruit consumed each year is still relatively low. In 2017, the per capita consumption of organic fresh fruit amounted to just under two kilos per person. In comparison to a decade earlier, however, the organic fruit consumption more than doubled.
