Genomic and phylogenetic characterization of a novel tenuivirus infecting wheat in South Africa

High-throughput Illumina sequencing was conducted on wheat samples from the Northern provinces of South Africa, showing unusual "yellowing" symptoms. After conventional RT-PCR targeting viruses known to be in the region, a virus discovery approach was followed. Analysis of RNAtag-seq indicated that a novel virus from the Tenuivirus genus was associated with these samples.
