A Hitachi TM3000 scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to examine the pore structure within the cement matrix crystallized around the temporary starch framework. Specimens approximately 200 mm2 in area and up to 3 mm thick were prepared for this analysis. To improve the electrical conductivity of the sample surfaces and ensure high-quality imaging, the specimens were coated with metal alloys in a vacuum chamber. SEM images were acquired at magnifications ranging from 50× to 500×. Performing SEM imaging is essential to visualize and characterize the microstructural features of starch-gelled concretes, particularly the porosity and the distribution of pores formed around the starch. Understanding the pore structure helps to assess how the temporary starch framework influences cement matrix crystallization, which in turn impacts mechanical properties, durability, and overall performance of the composite material. Such detailed microstructural insights are crucial for optimizing the formulation and processing of starch-modified cementitious composites.
