This dataset collected by Susan Kneebone and Julie Debeljak of Monash University is an output from an ARC Linkage Project funded by Monash University, World Vision Australia, Australian Human Rights Commission, Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department and Cardno Emerging Markets (Cardno Acil). It includes recordings and transcripts of interviews, a questionnaire, examples of consent forms, an annotated bibliography and a summary of Thai legislation. The problem of trafficking in persons and issues of forced migration in the Asia‑Pacific region are matters of national concern as they involve the security of the nation and the prevention of organised transnational crime. Approximately 80 confidential interviews were conducted with government officials, law enforcement officers and staff from non-government organisations in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in order to evaluate Australia's legal and policy responses to the trafficking of women and children from the perspective of criminal justice, international human rights law and migration law. The interview questionnaire sought to find details concerning gender and age in the cause and response to trafficking which could be analysed in order to inform a model to regulate forced migration in the Asia-Pacific region. A forthcoming monograph, Transnational crime and human rights: responses to human trafficking in the Greater Mekong Subregion, based on the project data, focuses on governance and takes into account the international, regional and national levels of all forms of human trafficking including labour trafficking and the special position of children. Project data has also been used to provide reference material for a workshop attended by 60 participants from Australian government agencies and non-government organisations involved in combating trafficking. The research is also useful for a number of disciplines including anthropology and geography, where information about the legal and policy framework is of interest.
