Microbial communities of environmental deep-sea sediments (>1,200 m deep, Gulf of Mexico) and petroleum API 40-enriched sediment samples (as the sole energy source) were identified by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. DNA was extracted using a PowerMarx soil (MoBio) DNA isolation kit according to the manufacturers instructions. Seven hypervariable regions (V2 to V4 and V6 to V9) were sequenced using an Ion Personal Genome Machine (PGM) system.
