National Landslide Damages and Losses

This National Landslide Damages and Losses (NLDL) database was developed by extracting relevant U.S. landslide loss and damage information from a variety of sources and compiling it within a consistent framework and database structure. Sources of information on economic losses, fatalities, and key event characteristics include, but are not limited to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Open-File reports, state and county hazard mitigation plans, state geological survey reports, risk assessments, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) OpenFEMA data. The current version includes 5,687 records from 131 sources, where each record corresponds either to an individual landslide event or to a collection of landslides. For each record the event location, event timing, reported landslide characteristics, as well as damage and loss information is reported where available, and relevant dollar amounts have been adjusted for inflation.

This data release includes:
(1) a table of the National Landslide Damages and Losses database (NLDL_V1.csv),
(2) a text file containing the references for the database (NLDL_V1_References.txt),
(3) a readme file providing additional details on the approaches, workflows, and data quality control steps used for database compilation (NLDL_ReadMe.txt),
(4) a data dictionary zipfile (NLDL_DataDictionary.zip) containing two subfiles;
      (a) a table of the database framework and attributes (NLDL_Framework.csv),
      (b) a pdf containing the definitions of relevant or uniquely defined terms in our database (NLDL_Glossary.pdf);
(5) a text file detailing integration of Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) data (NLDL_ODOT_Integration.txt),
(6) a text file detailing integration of FEMA data which includes both FEMA Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA) data and OpenFEMA data (NLDL_FEMA_Integration.txt),
(7) a table containing the FEMA PDA and their corresponding USGS loss types (NLDL_FEMA_Table1.pdf), and
(8) the metadata file for the data release (NLDL_Metadata.xml).
