Supplemental data for submission to Special Issue on Breakthroughs, Challenges, and Opportunities in Biological Data Visualization. Two studies were conducted on the importance of context in omics visualization for novices and non-domain experts. The first study examined the effectiveness of context map visualizations in communicating to non-domain experts. It showed that users answered questions about biological processes more accurately when presented with context maps. The study was done in 2 phases -- a pilot study with a smaller group and a larger crowdsourced study conducted online. The second study examined the design of an interface to guide the creation of context maps. It highlighted the need for interactivity in biological narrative visualizations to engage users and help them understand the information conveyed.
