A "natural spatial unit" or "natural space" is understood in the geographical sense as an "earth space delimited according to the overall character of its national nature". Factors such as relief, vegetation, water bodies, geology and climate are used for the designation. The "Geographical Survey of the Land 1:200,000 Natural Spatial Structures of Germany" of the Federal Office for Regional Studies and Spatial Research was completed for Baden-Württemberg in 1991.
