Prices of Enslaved Persons in New York and New Jersey

This is a dataset of sales, probate inventories, and newspaper advertisements of prices of enslaved persons in New York and New Jersey from 1672 to 1856, compiled from primary and secondary sources. It is the largest compilation of such data of its kind for Northern states and can be useful in measuring prices of the enslaved over time, by region, and by sex and age. Local historians will find the database useful for information regarding slavery in particular cities and counties.
