Salvia miltiorrhiza genome sequencing project mainly provides the draft genome sequences, covering 85% of the entire genome and containing 30,478 gene models belonging to 13,435 gene families. The draft genome of S. miltiorrhiza provides the first insight into the complexity of this relatively small genome in the Lamiaceae family. The revealed gene clusters for bioactive natural product biosynthesis accelerate the elucidation of the encoded pathways, setting an important precedent for studying natural product metabolism in medicinal herbs.
