Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) is an enteric pathogen that causes an estimated 300,000-500,000 deaths due to diarrhea especially in children under the age of five. In developed countries including US, ETEC causes traveler's diarrhea. It is critical to do comparative genomics on ETEC isolates to get an understanding about the evolution of ETEC genomes, virulence characteristics in order to propose strategies for vaccine development and containment of outbreaks.
