Expanded carbohydrate utilization of Cellvibrio japonicus

Cellvibrio japonicus is a Gram-negative bacterium of biotechnological importance, specifically for the number of carbohydrate active enzymes it produces. While the bacterium has a robust carbohydrate utilization capacity, there are several related short-chain oligosaccharides that the type strain (Ueda107) cannot use as a nutrient source. This goal of this study was to isolate strains of C. japonicus Ueda107 that had an expanded array of carbohydrates that could be used as growth substrates.
