The strain Neptunomonas japonica JAMM 1380 was isolated from the sediment adjacent to sperm whale carcasses off Kagoshima, Japan, at a depth of about 230 m. This strain indicates a relationship to the symbiotic bacterial clone R46 of marine oligochaete Osedax japonicus (99.9 % identities in the sequences of 16S ribosomal RNA gene). The complete genome sequence and comparative genome analysis among Osedax symbionts will provide important insights into their evolution, physiological functions, and interactions with their host animals.
