Single-cell C4 photosynthesis (SSC4) is a drought and high salt adaptation of photosynthesis that has evolved specially and independently in two lineages of seed plants from the Chenopodiaceae. We hypothesize that unique evolution of gene family and special expression pattern support the independent evolution of SCC4 without Karaz anatomy from C3 photosynthesis. To test this hypothesis, we generate a de novo genome assembly and genome-wide transcript expression data for Suaeda aralocaspica, one of four reported SCC4 species within terrestrial plants.
