This experiment examines the total number of insects and total number of species that were present within a quadrat placed in two different habitats. <b>Methods:</b> -The experiment took place on September 27, 2016 at the York University Keele campus from approximately 3:30-4:30 pm in cool and partly cloudy weather conditions. A total of 20 quadrat samples were taken – 10 from the grasslands and 10 from the woodlots. -A single quadrat was used for the experiment. Beginning in the grasslands, the quadrat was randomly placed and positioned on the ground. The number of insects and number of species occupying the quadrat was carefully counted and recorded. Each count took approximately two minutes until the next quadrat sample was observed. -In total, 10 random samples from the grasslands and 10 random samples from the woodlots were observed and recorded. The time spent in each of the habitats was approximately 30 minutes. -All the data was recorded in a notebook and later copied onto an Excel sheet. The data would then be uploaded to Figshare. <b>Hypothesis:</b> -Habitat will have a direct correlation on the number of insects and number of species defined within each quadrat sample. <b>Predictions:</b> -On average, the number of insects and species will be greater in the grassland quadrats as opposed to the woodlot quadrats. -The grasslands provide a greater abundance of sunlight and plant diversity, which should attract and provide more resources to various insects and species. <b>Meta-data:</b> -Habitat = The location of the quadrat. The data is qualitative and categorical. -Number of insects = The total number of insects observed within each quadrat. The data is quantitative and continuous. -Number of different recognizable taxonomic units = The total number of species observed within each quadrat. The data is quantitative and continuous.
