VPRS 12265 Register of Railway Debentures

The series, entitled Registerwould be more appropriately described as a journal. This journal records the purchase and half yearly valuation of Victorian Railway debentures which were authorised by the Railways Loan Act 1900 and its amendment in 1901, so that funds could be raised for railway construction and maintenance.This series was maintained by the Receiver and Paymasters Office, a sub division within the Department of the Treasurer. This sub division was responsible for receiving revenue from the sale of debentures, and repaying investors when they were redeemed, so they required a record of the current value of a given debenture should it be redeemed.For audit purposes, as specified under the Audit Act, the details in this series were also maintained in VPRS 1994 Debenture Registers by the Audit Office within the Department of the Treasurer, though some information in this series is obscured due to water damage.Further details relating to debenture interest rates and dates of maturity can be found in VPRS 12268 Register of Debentures Issued under Various Acts.
