The English School Census (ESC) is an administrative database held by the Department for Education (DfE). Access to the ESC data is, of course, highly restricted. Therefore, as a substitute, this data set was carefully constructed using publicly available sources by staff at the Office for National Statistics (special mention to Stephanie Blanchard). Among the sources used were English School Census published data and 2011 census output tables, while adjustments were made to account for non-response. Hence the data were created using real data sources - not through simulating from a statistical model - and reflect the typical structure present in the ESC.Description
