Bartonella bacteria are parasites of diverse animals and a potential reservoir for zoonotic infections of humans. This study examined how a strain of Bartonella krasnovii evolved when passaged through two different species of gerbil hosts, Gerbillus andersoni (GA) or Gerbillus pyramidum (GP), or alternating between them. This experimental study of Bartonella genome evolution is important for understanding why these bacteria are such prevalent parasites in animal populations.
