Mycobacterium elephantis is a rapid growing mycobacterium capable of growing at temperatures up to 45°C. It was first isolated from the lung abscess of an elephant that had died of chronic respiratory disease. Since then, it has been isolated repeatedly from patients in different parts of the world, mainly in respiratory specimens.
