One possible strategy to tune magnetic properties of layered honeycomb-type materials with magnetic metal cations is an ion intercalation between neighboring layers. Using this approach, two parameters will be changed: a charge of the metal cations, and the interlayer distance. In the proposal, we plan investigations of MxRuCl3 (0≤x≤1) electronic structure after electrochemical intercalation of magnetic double-charged 3d transition metal cations into antiferromagnetic RuCl3, using XANES and EXAFS measurements at the K-edge of 3d metals, and at the Ru L2/L3-edge. Co-intercalation of H2O molecules will be investigated as well. Impact of inserted cations will be evaluated and brought together with detailed magnetic studied performed at the home institute.
