As the number of sequenced fungal genomes continues to increase, many genomic and comparative genomics projects have been performed. The genus Aspergillus has been heavily studied as it is known as a diverse group of species found in worldwide niches. Many genus-sequencing efforts have been put into studying different aspergilli species and the produced SMs. Aspergilli were found to produce extracellular enzymes (section Nigri), pharmaceuticals (A. fumigatus and A. terreus), toxic fungal compounds such as aflatoxins (A. flavus and A. parasiticus), and fermented foods such as soy sauce and sake (A. oryzae and A. sojae). However, some less well-studied species, such as Aspergillus wentii and Aspergillus steynii, can also produce many SMs that remains to be characterized.
