Deep terrestrial microbial communities in the Fennoscandian Shield. The microbial communities of the Olkiluoto Island deep biosphere have been characterized by both culture dependent and independent methods since the 1980s. These approaches have revealed a diversity of microorganisms of wide metabolic variety. Archaeal lineages belonging to the Deep-sea Hydrothermal Vent Euryarchaeota (DHVE), ANME-2D and MSBL1 Methanobacteriales have been found to be especially abundant at specific depths of the Olkiluoto deep biosphere, but the reason for their abundances have not been determined
