TheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI)isacrosscuttingnationalvisionfornanotechnologydevelopmentintheUnitedStates.TheFederaleffortinnanotechnologycoordinatesU.S.investmentinresearchanddevelopment(R&D)innanoscalescience,engineering,technology,andrelatedactivitiesacrosstheU.S.Government.InFY2014,eventhoughfiveagenciesgarnered93percentoftheFederalspendinginnanotechnologyR&D,27agencyunitsfrom20top‐levelFederalentitiesparticipatedinnanotechnologyactivities.The21stCenturyNanotechnologyResearchandDevelopmentActof2003callsforaNationalNanotechnologyAdvisoryPaneltoreviewtheNNIperiodically.Designatedin2004tobethatpanel,thePresident’sCouncilofAdvisorsonScienceandTechnology(PCAST)hasreviewedtheNNIfivetimes,andthisreportisthethirdofthisAdministration’sPCAST.
