The oomycete pathogen Phytophthora cactorum is the causal agent of strawberry crown rot, a major disease in temperate regions leading significant economic losses. Chemical fumigants for the control of this disease are being phased out, putting pressure on the breeding of new resistant strawberry cultivars. Breeding programs have benefitted from identification of the basis of pathogenicity and resistance in other oomycete pathosystems. An isolate of Phytophthora cactorum was sequenced to aid identification of effector genes that modulate host resistance.
