The SF Amenities Gap

Access to public amenities such as parks, libraries, and community centers is essential to improving physical and mental health, reducing stress and loneliness, building strong communities, and overall improving the quality of life of nearby residents. However, access to these resources is not always distributed equally across a city. Differences in neighborhood population and income levels can create disparities in who is able to benefit from these public spaces. San Francisco is known for its vibrant and diverse neighborhoods, yet access to public amenities is not necessarily distributed equally across these neighborhoods. Understanding where disparities exist is important to guide future planning decisions and promote a more equitable city. By combining data regarding current public amenities in San Francisco with demographic information, this project explores whether certain SF neighborhoods are underserved in terms of access to these important public resources.
