Dataset for Adjunct retino-protective activity of Ayurvedic polyherbal compound compared to conventional standard of care in Pramehaja Timira (non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy) – an open label, double arm, exploratory, randomized controlled trial

This dataset supports a randomized controlled trial investigating an integrative approach to managing non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). Diabetes mellitus, a global health burden, often leads to diabetic retinopathy, an ocular complication and a major cause of vision loss in working-age adults. Current standard treatments manage symptoms but do not offer a cure. This study evaluates the efficacy of a comprehensive Ayurvedic treatment protocol, alongside conventional care, in preventing or halting NPDR progression. The dataset includes clinical observations from an open-label, two-arm, parallel-group RCT involving a total study duration of 80 days (40 days treatment + 40 days follow-up). Primary outcomes include changes in fundus photography and OCT macular cube metrics, with secondary outcomes assessed via ETDRS LogMAR visual acuity. The dataset will enable future analyses on the potential of Ayurvedic interventions such as Rasayana therapy, Nasya, and Panchakarma procedures of Ayurveda for retinal protection and improved visual function. Results are intended to inform integrative ophthalmic care models and support the development of standardized protocols for DR management.
