Microbial lifestyle and synbiotic effects

In this study, we employed a novel in vitro PolyFermS model to investigate interactions between Salmonella Infantis and a multispecies synbiotic in a simulated chicken gut environment. Cecal microbiota from three chickens were immobilized into porous gel beads and cultivated for 9-12 days, simulating biofilm-associated and planktonic communities. Using 16S sequencing, qPCR, HPLC-RI, and cultivation techniques, we demonstrated that continuous treatment with inulin (2g/L) and five probiotic strains from the species Enterococcus faecium, Pediococcus acidilactici, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. animalis, Limosilactobacillus reuteri and Ligilactobacillus salivarius reduce the abundance of S. Infantis.
