Post-Trial Responsibility in Clinical Trials of Implantable Neural Devices: Exploring Current Practices and Ethical Implications

This thesis examines how clinical trial participants implanted with novel brain devices are supported once the study comes to an end. Researchers and participants in the study often need to dedicate ongoing resources to maintain brain devices, and they can face major barriers in doing so. This thesis develops practical recommendations to guide fair and safe post-trial support in Australia. It develops a practical framework for improving how studies can support "brain pioneers", who put their brains and health on the line to help future patients and advance science.
