Bacterial hybrids are major clinically successful pathogens, yet, very little is known about the different mechanisms through which bacterial hybrids can be formed, as well as, how they evolve. In this study we constructed 11 bacterial hybrids between E. coli and S. Typhimurium that contained additional chromosomal DNA. We analysed the mechanisms by which hybrids with additional chromosomal DNA can be formed and studied how they can evolve.
