NRS-13761 | Indexes and registers of letters received

The indexes are arranged alphabetically by the name of the writer, department or subject of the correspondence and give the annual progressive number of the letter registered in the Registers of letters received. The indexes for letters received from private persons for the years 1863 and 1864 are missing. The registers contain the following information in respect of each letter registered: the annual progressive number of the letter; the number of previous papers (if any); the date of registration; the name of the writer; the place of residence of the writer; the date of the letter; record of any reference of the letter to other departments; and, the result of the application (record of attachment to later papers and any subsequent action). During the period July to December 1860 the correspondence of the Lands and Survey Departments was amalgamated and correspondence addressed to the Surveyor General for this period is registered in the relevant Lands Department correspondence register.
