Relocated Earthquake Catalog for Nevada (2008 — 2023)

This dataset contains a relocated earthquake catalog for Nevada and the surrounding region for years 2008 through 2023. All events during this time period detected by Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) analysts have been located using a 3D velocity model for the state, and a subset are then relocated using waveform cross-correlation. All events have revised magnitude estimates using a newly developed distance scaling relation and station correction terms.

The catalog is presented as a space-delimited text file with the following columns:

evid: event ID from the NSL databse

otime: origin time estimate

lat: latitude estimate (decimal degree)

lon: longitude estimate (decimal degree)

dep: event depth relative sea level (km)

mag: local magnitude (revised from the NSL archive listing)

reloc: 1 or 0 depending on whether the event is waveform-relocated or not

The station terms are also uploaded to this repository as a two-column file: station name and correction term value. The sign convention is such that positive / negative station terms correspond to amplification / deamplification respectively. To implement the station terms in the magnitude calculations, we first compute the log10 Wood-Anderson equivalent waveform amplitude in millimeters, correct for distance (see citation for details), subtract the appropriate station term, and finally aggregate by median across stations to get the event magnitude estimate.
