The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is home to the world's largest permafrost region spanning both high and low latitudes. In recent decades, this permafrost region has undergone rapid degradation, and one of the most prominent manifestations of this degradation is the formation of thermokarst lakes. These lakes have drawn considerable scholarly attention due to their capacity to regulate the carbon cycle, water and energy fluxes. However, the spatial distribution of thermokarst lakes in this region remains largely uncharacterized, which impedes our understanding of permafrost responses and their associated carbon feedbacks to climate change.
