Composite water samples were taken at 3 depths from lakes around the state of Iowa on a weekly basis for 15 weeks from May to August in 2018. Extracted DNA sequenced to the V9 region of the 18S rRNA gene was used to create phylogenetic profiles of the phytoplankton community. The overall goal of the study was to explore harmful algal blooms and look at the phytoplankton community structure in relation to these events.
