The purpose of the project was to fill the important gap in our understanding of the process of evolution by checking if sexual selection does help to purge deleterious load within populations. The project used experimental evolution approach, and the subject of evolution in laboratory was a mite with very short generation time, in which males vary in expression of elaborated sexually selected trait. Populations were forced to evolve under male- or female-biased sex ratios, and after 28 generations (about 2 years in laboratory) their genomes were sequenced in pools to check whether amount of rare, presumably deleterious variants is lower in male-biased lines.
