Drumcullen Motte & Bailey Castle (OF036-028004-)

Drumcullen (Droim Cuilinn/Holly Ridge) timber castle was constructed between 1169-1186 AD during the English conquest of this part of County Offaly, in the medieval kingdom of Meath. This castle stands on high ground overlooking Drumcullen Church (OF036-028001-) to the south-east. The steep-sided flat-topped earthen mound supported a timber tower known as a 'Bretesche', anglicised 'Brittas'. A trapezoidal-shaped courtyard known as a bailey was defended by an earthen bank surmounted by a timber palisade with outer fosse which lies immediately to the north-west of the mound. The entrance to the bailey was protected by a timber gatehouse. The courtyard provided a safe garrison for the English army. The cropmark of the enclosing bank of this levelled bailey is visible today. This monument stands on private land and there is no access to the monument without the landowner's permission.
