<P>The Gratz brothers, Barnard and Michael, were merchants based out of Philadelphia during the eighteenth century. Their heavy involvement in the fur trade took them and others into the American West.</P> <P>Bound, multi-volume series, with table of contents in each volume, of Gratz brothers papers. Collected by William Vincent Byars from different libraries across the United States to give an appreciation of life in early America and to document the first waves of westward expansion. Series assembled in 1915. Volumes include some originals, essays, newsclippings, photographs, and photocopies of maps pasted or bound into the volumes.
