Integrated surveillance records of invasive mosquito detections in Spanish municipalities, 2004–2024

The Integrated surveillance records of invasive mosquito detections in Spanish municipalities is a curated dataset covering all 8,132 Spanish municipalities, describing their status in relation to the detection of any of the three invasive mosquito species: Aedes albopictus, Aedes japonicus, and Aedes aegypti. The dataset spans a 21-year period from the first detection of Aedes albopictus in 2004, to December 31, 2024. For each municipality, it provides information on the year of first detection of any of the three species, the surveillance strategy by which the detection was made and the data source in case of field detections. Detection references from Mosquito Alert records are not included in the dataset, though as all citizen reports, they are publicly accessible via the interactive map at https://map.mosquitoalert.com by selecting both the municipality name and time period. The dataset has a dual origin, combining two distinct types of information to maximize surveillance capacity in Spain: (i) field sampling data and (ii) citizen science observations. Field data derive from the authors' own records complemented by scientific literature, academic institutions, grey literature and public health authorities. Citizen-sourced data have been collected since 2014 through the Mosquito Alert platform, contributed by thousands of citizen scientists and validated by a team of expert entomologists. This dataset forms the primary basis for the article: Integrating citizen science and field sampling into next-generation early warning systems for vector surveillance: Twenty years of municipal detections of Aedes invasive mosquito species in Spain by the same authors. Intellectual property (IP) rights for this dataset are held by the authors and their affiliated institutions for field data, and by the Mosquito Alert community regarding citizen science data. For each municipality higher-level administrative divisions are included at NUTS3 (province) and NUTS2 (Autonomous Community) levels, providing both names and standard Spanish administrative codes. For each of the three mosquito species, the dataset includes three fields reporting (i) the year of first detection by field sampling (if applicable) (ii) the reference consulted or own data used to validate that detection (if available), and (iii) year of detection via Mosquito Alert citizen science (if applicable).
