The Senegal River is 1,800 km long, the second longest river in West Africa. It runs along the northern section of the country, and the main tributaries are the Bafing, Bakoye, and the Faleme rivers; they all have their sources in the Fouta Djallon Mountains. The Senegal River Basin has a total area of 289,000 square km. It is comprised of three parts: the upper basin, valley, and delta. These regions all experience different climatic, hydrographic, and topographic conditions. The river basin area is heavily populated with 85% of citizens living near the Senegal River. As a result of the sub-Saharan desert climate the Senegal River Basin often experiences long periods of droughts.
