Specimen of red opal in fine-grained igneous rock from Mexico (specimen number: BIRUG 824). Mexico has been one of the most abundant sources of red opal (also known as 'fire opal') for over 100 years. The red–orange colour of 'fire opals' is distinct from other opal varieties (e.g. blue, green and pink) due to a different composition of trace elements; however the composition of red, orange and yellow opal remains very similar to colourless opals (McOrist & Smallwood, 1995). This specimen was donated to the Lapworth Museum by W. McLean (1915). Digitisation was carried out by Andrew Jones using an Artec Spider 3D scanner. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
