FICTIONAL AUTHORSHIP AND EPISTOLARY GENRE IN "UMA VISITA DE ALCIBÍADES"

Abstract In this article, we propose a reading of Machado de Assis' "Uma visita de Alcibíades", that analyses how the author fiction procedure articulates with the introduction of the epistolary genre in its form. The short story has two versions: one version published in Jornal das Famílias, in 1876, and another published in Gazeta de Notícias, in 1882, and later collected in Papéis avulsos. Through a comparative analysis, we aim to show how these literary devices are fundamental in the rewriting process of "Uma visita de Alcibíades", resulting in a new and modern reading experience of this fiction text.
