Whole-genome sequencing of a sentinel Canadian amphibian, the freeze tolerant Gray Tree Frog

The Gray tree frog (Dryophytes versicolor) is a sentinel Canadian species native to Southeastern Canada that is one of only a handful of freeze tolerant vertebrates. We propose that sequencing the tree frog genome will allow for the characterization of the unique genes responsible for natural freeze tolerance, survival of complete oxygen deprivation, and colour changing capacities in amphibians. Our ultimate goal is to help establish the tree frog as a model system with sufficient genomic resources to seek out novel genes, modified genes, altered gene transcriptional regulation, and post-transcriptional controls on mRNAs (e.g. microRNAs, post- translational modifications) that together confer natural freeze tolerance to cells and organs.
