Two novel virus genomes from public sequence data: a candidate new bacteriophage genus (Silazvirus) and a candidate novel human anellovirus (Anellovirus Silaz-1)

Two novel virus genomes recovered by mining public sequencing data with the PHAGEFORGE / VIRION pipeline (assemble → geNomad viral ID → CheckV completeness → DIAMOND/skani novelty → read map-back for coverage/chimera → NCBI table2asn validation). 1. Silazvirus (candidate new bacteriophage genus). A 58,107 bp complete dsDNA tailed phage (141 bp direct terminal repeat) from municipal-landfill leachate (SRA SRR6485349, Canada). 18× even coverage, no chimera, no antibiotic-resistance or virulence genes. No ANI match to any of 19,433 RefSeq viral or 26,873 GenBank complete Caudoviricetes genomes; vConTACT3 gene-sharing places it in no known genus/family/order → candidate new genus. Bacteriophage — infects bacteria only; cannot infect humans. 2. Anellovirus Silaz-1 (candidate novel human anellovirus). A 2,934 bp complete circular ssDNA genome (family Anelloviridae, Betatorquevirus-related) recovered from a human blood metagenome (SRA SRR14209608, China). Full even read coverage (median 9×), correct ORF architecture (ORF1 capsid, 595 aa). Its ORF1 is only 55.5% aa identical to the nearest of 41,678 GenBank Anelloviridae proteins — below the ~69% species-demarcation threshold → candidate novel species. Anelloviruses are near-universal human commensal viruses of blood; this is a genuine novel human virus but a non-pathogenic commensal, not a pathogen. Scope & status. Both genomes are database-confirmed novel lineages, defined against public reference databases (July 2026); host and tropism are inferred from viral-family membership pending experimental confirmation. Reported as candidate taxa pending formal ICTV ratification and independent peer review.
