Private forests integrated into a mass with an area exceeding a threshold of 4 hectares, state forests and community forests (Articles L.311-1, L.311-2, L.312-1 of the Forest Code).

Clearing is defined as “any voluntary operation leading directly or indirectly to the destruction of the wooded state of land and ending its forest destination”.
Any clearance requires prior authorisation from the administration. Clearing in woods and forests below a threshold of 4 ha, defined by Prefectural Decree of 19 May 2003, is exempt from this authorisation.
