Abstract: Information systems (ISs) are complex socio-technical systems in which human actors, technological components, and organizational processes interact dynamically. Their success requires acknowledging this socio-material nature, as many failures arise from neglected human and organizational dimensions, such as resistance to change, leadership weaknesses, insufficient training, internal power struggles, and communication breakdowns, rather than from purely technical shortcomings. While much research highlights the role of top management in IS success, the contribution of middle managers remains comparatively unexplored. Positioned between strategic leadership and operational teams, middle managers play a pivotal role in translating the strategic vision into effective IS adoption and use. This study introduces the Middle Management IS Understanding Behavior (MMISUB) construct, which captures both cognitive and behavioral engagement with ISs outputs to enhance strategic and operational decision-making. MMISUB moves beyond basic IS literacy by focusing on how middle managers interpret, apply, and leverage ISs to create value. Using SmartPLS4 structural equation modeling, we extended the DeLone and McLean IS Success Model by incorporating MMISUB as a central determinant. The empirical setting of firms in Peru offers insights into IS success in a Latin American context, marked by diverse ISs and organizational maturity levels. The findings show that MMISUB significantly improves IS success, strengthening business–IT alignment and IS solution effectiveness.
